Institute of Directors

Institute of Directors

Founded in 1903, the IoD is the leading organisation for directors and senior managers with more than 52,000 members in the UK.

Members include CEO's of large corporations as well as entrepreneurial directors of SMEs and start-up companies.

The SDDC has been created by the Institute of Directors – Scotland to provide a series of services designed specifically to benefit the professional development of business leaders at director level in the private, the public and not-for profit sectors.

The aim of this site is to help you identify the best possible way forward that will strengthen your organisation and develop your personal career.

What we do

The Scottish Director Development Centre supports directors and senior managers in their work to enhance performance, business achievement and success. Our Executive Coaching and Mentoring Service is one of the tools we provide to support you in your role.

Individuals may wish to:

  • Increase confidence
  • Set clear personal outcomes
  • Improve decision making
  • Reduce stress
  • Lift performance
  • Gain creativity
  • Increase credibility
  • Solve a specific business issue

Organisations may wish to:

  • Retain key people
  • Improve staff management skills
  • Reduce conflict
  • Support high flyers
  • Increase Director/senior manager commitment
  • Challenge traditional thinking

What we won't do

But there are some things we won’t give you.  You won’t get an inexperienced coach/mentor and you won’t get someone upon whom you become dependent in the longer term.

Our coaches and mentors are all well respected business people with a wide experience and knowledge across the private and public sectors.  Their role is to coach/mentor individuals with particular issues and then step back to let them get on with it!

How the service works

  1. Initial contact
A confidential telephone call to identify if and how we can support you
  2. Scoping session.
A 1.5 hr meeting 1 to 1 to clarify and agree goals and action plans
  3. Review and action sessions.
4 sessions over 3 months to work towards achieving the goals and action plan
  4. Progress review.
In the last session we review progress to see if the task is complete, if there is a need for further sessions, or if an alternative method of further support can be adopted

A Professional Approach

All of our coaches and mentors have attended training in the use of appropriate models and approaches. They also abide by our code of practice which is that:

  • Your interests take precedence at all times
  • All discussions with you are in confidence unless you specifically wish to share them with a third party
  • The process is only entered into where there is a clear commitment and likely benefit to you
  • All costs and activities will be agreed in advance with you
  • You may hold your meetings off site if you wish

Today's Web Marketing Advice from Scoosh

Marketing Your Website - Social Media

Social media has exploded on to the scene in the past couple of years with user generated content and instant interaction forcing site owners to re-think both their site’s content and how they communicate with their audience.

Social news e.g. Digg

Getting a website ranked highly on sites such as Digg has been known to send so much traffic that sites have crashed under the weight. Their users submit links and stories to the site with other users voting and commenting on them. The more times your site is “Dugg” the higher you are ranked.

Social network e.g. Facebook, My Space, Bebo

Profile pages on social networks can help to develop a dialogue with your audience and spread the word amongst the network’s users, but before you commit yourself ask why would anyone want to be your website’s ‘friend’ and how will you make sure the content is fresh and worth reading? If you have a good answer to both of these crack on, if not don’t set one up just for the sake of it.

Become a Social Network

According to Hitwise, “Social networks now account for 1 in every 10 UK Internet visits and 1 in every 5 page views. Only search engines receive more UK Internet visits than social networks.” This is only set to continue as the social networks targeting specific niches explode on to the scene catering for the personal tastes and interests of users in a way the large generic social networks can’t.

The niches within the niches of topics such as music, cooking, travel, web design, sport, fashion, geographic locations, science… etc are all up for grabs. There is nothing stopping you grabbing a large part of that pie.

Micro blogging e.g. Twitter

The new kid on the block creating waves, Twitter’s proposition is incredibly simple; in no more than 160 characters send your followers a message. The unique power Twitter has is the immediacy of a message’s impact. Your ‘tweet’ is sent to all your followers instantly, making it very useful to communicate blog updates, special offers, start a conversation, run a poll... and see results within a matter of minutes or hours.
The danger the service runs is overuse or misuse from companies literally spamming users so much they become apathetic to message and even opt out of the service altogether. Tweets such as “It’s another great Friday” from a business are a step towards being removed from people’s lists.
