What is SEO? PDF Print Email

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation.

Essentially SEO is about making sure that your website is built to standards that ensure it is properly indexed by search engines.

The goal is to ensure that visitors searching for your product or service via search engines will find you.

Many Web companies market themselves as 'experts' who can guarantee you a 'number one ranking'.  Be careful.  No one can guarantee you a number one ranking and if they do they are probably using practices that will result in your website being removed from the major search engines.

Your SEO strategy should cover the following areas:-

  • Ensure that visitors get the information they want.

High quality content is important especially on your home page. Clear titles, headings, page descriptions text ensure 'searchable' content.

  • Make the website accessible

Database websites, flash, graphics and other design elements can make sites look 'flashy' and 'modern' but not all of this type of content can be found by search engines. Accessible websites rank higher.

  • Popularity

Search engines rank websites more highly if they are more popular.  It is good practice to have your website listed on other websites. Use what google refers to as 'natural' links, and avoid companies who promise you thousands of links to increase your website popularity. Search engines can distinguish 'natural' links and will penalise your website if you use dubious practices.
