Should I worry about web standards

Many clients ask about web standards and what they are.

Will it compromise the design? Will it affect my Google ranking?  What about Flash or JavaScript?  Should I comply?  What are my legal obligations?

There are different schools of thought on standards, some web design agencies will promote strict adherence to standards, and others will take a more 'loose' approach.  Some argue that the standard is not what has been laid down by w3c but what is common practice, is the real standard.  And what if you want to break from the standard and offer something new to the marketplace.

What is self-evident is that the web is constantly evolving, changing and re-inventing itself.  Standards, practices and technology constantly change.  Some very large businesses and household names have websites that don't comply.  Is it affecting their business?  Probably not.  Should they comply? Probably Yes. Why don't they comply?  A myriad of reasons - time, money, poor design, older technology, perception as not important.

The world and the web would be a whole lot simpler if we all used the same technology, the same computers and the same browsers. But we don't.

At Scoosh we take a realistic approach.
