What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of improving the volume of traffic to a website from search engines via 'natural' search results.
Natural search results is the normal list of search results that you see when you type a phrase into a search engine. It is called natural to differentiate it from paid for, sponsored or advertisement links.

Many people mistakenly believe that the goal of SEO is to solely to achieve high ranking for a few keyword phrases in the major search engines.

At Scoosh we believe this is the wrong approach to take, when looking at Search Engine Optimisation.

So what is the true goal of SEO?

We believe any business must match its website goals with its business goals.

In simple terms, most businesses have the goal of selling a product or service to make profit.

This  should also be the goal of your website.

What  would you rather have?

A. 1000 visitors to your website. (Who visit and leave)

or

B. 10 visitors who place an order or contact you about your product or service.

We would prefer answer B.

When it comes to SEO, what you’re looking for isn’t just random visitors, but visitors who are more likely to buy what you have to sell.

You’re looking for qualified traffic.

Surely the number of hits I receive is important?

Well yes and no.  The old cliché about business 'turnover is vanity, profit is sanity'  can be modified for the web. Hits just for the sake of it is 'vanity', qualified traffic is 'sanity'

So what should I do?

Your goal is not to rank for what seems like a popular search term, but to find those search terms that will increase the likelihood of making a 'sale'.

Find the search terms that lead to sales. (Look in your statistics) It does not matter if they have a poor ranking. Once found then work on improving the ranking in the search engines.  The result is increased sales.

Conclusion

If the goal for your business is to drive traffic to your site and  boast about the number of hits you recieve, then continue to focus on where your website ranks.  But if you have some real business goals e.g. to convert visitors to purchasers, then the goal of any SEO or Web Marketing Campaign is to convert traffic into paying customers.

#4 Search Engine Optimisation

If you're using image names like 1234.jpg on your website, search engines will not identify the image.

Use descriptive image names instead. If your website contains an image of a silver iPod Classic, the image name 'silver-ipod-classic.jpg is better.

Today's Web Marketing Advice from Scoosh

Marketing Your Website - Email Marketing

Building a list of email addresses is a relatively cheap method of getting your product/ service in front of your target audience.

Writing a marketing email

The subject line: Give the email’s subject line as much consideration as the email itself. It is the first thing people will see and it can make the difference between the email being opened or deleted straight away.

Do:

  • Use your company’s name in the title
  • Communicate a benefit/ promotion (e.g. “25% off football boots”)
  • Be descriptive so they know what is in the email

Don’t:

  • Pretend the email is about something else (e.g. “You are a winner”)
  • Use a false sense of urgency (“Important email!”)
  • SHOUT USING CAPITALS AND EXCLAMATION MARKS!!
  • Use punctuation such as ! or £, they are used by ISPs to identify spam

Be Aware:

  • Many email programs including Microsoft's Outlook generate emails, but they are not always easily read by your audience. Check with your web designer about creating properly formatted email newsletters.

The body of your email: The main point is keep the content as short and to the point as possible, no one will read an essay.

If you are using a one off promotional mail shot, use one promotion/offer per email with a clear 'call to action' to avoid confusing the reader and making it clear what they need to do next.

If you are sending out a newsletter, make sure it is also provides interesting/useful content and not just dry company information.

Competitions are a great way to encourage interaction.
