Google has predicted that more searches will be performed on smart phones, tablets, iPads, than on the traditional desktop PC.
It was only a matter of time before this would affect how well a website performs in Google’s search results.

Google is also looking at making ‘mobile-friendliness’ a factor for search rankings.
This may result in those websites which are mobile friendly moving up the Google rankings at the expense of those that are not.
What factors will Google look at when deciding what is a ‘mobile friendly website’
Google indicates that for websites to be ‘mobile friendly’ they will consider amongst other factors :-
- Is the text too small?
- Do you need to scroll sideways?
- Are the links too small?
From a more technical standpoint Google will look at the following factors and website to determine it’s ‘mobile-friendliness’
Does your website :-
- Avoid software that is not common on mobile phones and devices (e.g. Flash).
- Use text that is legible without having to zoom.
- Resize content on the screen so users do not have to scroll horizontally or zoom.
- Place links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily ‘tapped’.
What is Google’s aim?
Google is using these labels as a first step in ‘helping mobile users to have a better mobile web experience’.
