Should websites use ‘read more’

There has been a lot of comment and opinion on the use of ‘read more’ and similar links and whether it is good practice (or not) to use them on websites.

Having a ‘read more’ at the bottom of a small piece of content to indicate that there is more to read seems both obvious and not something that could be contentious.

The main reasons for the amount of comment is because of concerns about how ‘read more’ affects a website’s SEO and the general consensus is that it should were practicable, be avoided.

When creating a link –  for example, Search Engine Optimisation

The phrase ‘Search Engine Optimisation’ is called the anchor text and it should provide a basic idea of what the page linked to is about.

What is best practice for Anchor Text?

Be concise

Make the text short and descriptive and flow in the body of the text around it.

Format it

Make the text stand out from the regular text but not so much that it makes the overall page difficult to read.

It is important that your website users do not accidentally click on them.

Avoid these

Avoid writing generic anchor text for example ‘view all, ‘read more’ or ‘click here’
